Provincial/Rural Road Improvement Project (Loan-2670)

The Project aims to rehabilitate and pave 505.4 km of rural roads to improve rural connectivity to paved national and provincial road networks has a $5.5 million funding from Nordic Development Fund for adaptation activities already approved. 

Recommended interventions for inclusion of climate change adaptation into the project include engineering adjustments, capacity building and information generation (preparing climate change vulnerability maps to influence transport sector planning), and introducing ecosystem-based adaptation strategies focusing on environmental and green planning for project roads to improve flood and drought management. It will also establish programs for the Ministry of Rural Development for capacity building in effective road maintenance and management, disaster mitigation, and over-loading control, as well as develop a program for building capacity of local private sector contractors in undertaking rural road maintenance works.
