WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT?
The global development community has been paying increased attention to the role of rigorous impact evaluation in recent years. This course is a considered blend of theory and practice to support better on-the-ground evaluations. Participants are introduced to the concepts behind rigorous impact evaluations: the counterfactual question, control groups, sample frames, bias and sampling methods, They are then presented information to build their own evaluation designs. This includes good questionnaire design, drafting evaluation terms of reference, management of surveys, quality control techniques, and database entry options. Finally, participants will learn about presentation and interpretation of results, and ways to disseminate important research findings.
Professionals who are involved in formulating, managing or monitoring interventions and/ or prepare, supervise or participate in impact evaluations. These can be desk officers, programme managers, task managers for a national or local government, for an international donor agency or for an NGO. Those actively involved in evaluation designs are encouraged to bring one of their projects with them, and so get hands-on help drafting a TOR, questionnaires, etc. No prior economic or statistical knowledge is required to attend this course.
