Five Feet High and Rising: Cities and Flooding in the 21st Century

This paper is a product of the Transport, Energy& Urban Sustainable Development Unit, East Asiaand Pacific Region and addresses the increasinglyimportant issue of urban flooding. Disaster statisticsappear to show that floods are becoming morefrequent, with medium-scale flooding increasingfastest. The impact of this is driven by a combinationof natural and human-induced factors. This paperforms part of the preparation of the Global Handbookfor Urban Flood Risk Management, commissionedby the World Bank and funded by the Global Facilityfor Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR).
