SPREP’s EbA, Ridge-to-Reef Approach to Support Resilience, Reforestation in Solomon Islands

The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) is implementing an ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) project to rehabilitate and restore forests in Choiseul province, Solomon Islands. The project will also promote soil stability, reduce sediment flow and support water catchment areas.

The project's EbA approach aims to build resilience to climate change in areas where natural forests have been lost due to land clearing and logging. Reforestation activities are expected to help protect communities from flooding and landslides while providing environmental benefits such as an improved water supply and reduced erosion. The project will also plant trees in coastal areas to enhance coastal resilience to climate change and combat shoreline erosion.

SPREP is working with the local landowning communities to implement an EbA and ridge to reef approach. The project's ridge to reef approach encompasses actions to ensure: intact slope vegetation by protecting soil from erosion; healthy rivers through ensuring a clean water supply; healthy reefs through ensuring healthy coastal water; and sustained fish populations.

SPREP is implementing the project with funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID). [SPREP Press Release]
