Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH “Ecosystem-based Adaptation in River Basins Project (Philippines)”

About us

River basins provide habitats and resources for endangered species and livelihood for people within the basin and beyond. These include different sectors, such as domestic water supply, agriculture, energy, environment and health. However, river basin degradation has not only affected the overall wellbeing of communities, but it has also disturbed ecological conditions and functions of ecosystems that increases risks of flood, landslides, and other natural hazards.

The Deutsch Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been commissioned by the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety (BMU) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI) to implement the “Ecosystem-based management and application of ecosystem values in two river basins in the Philippines” (E2RB) Project. The project is implemented jointly with River Basin Control Office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to strengthen ecosystem services, protect biodiversity and reduce climate change and natural disaster vulnerability in two river basins through integrated management and application of ecosystem services assessment and ecosystem-based adaptation measures.

The project supports national policies and contributes to improved coordination and integration of sectors through an ecosystem-based approach. Key outputs will be the reduction of hazard prone households, and improved water availability and quality in four watersheds by enhancing the adaptive capacity and resilience of the community through harmonization of sectoral and regional plans and strengthening of coordination between and among river basin stakeholders. The project will facilitate coordinated EbA measures within the river basins and use the values of ecosystem services as a basis for the private sector buy-in and cooperation. It aims to contribute to the financing of conservation and protection measures to maintain ecosystem services and protected areas, including strengthening of scaling up of efforts through knowledge and information management.

The E2RB Project showcases benefits of ecosystem-based management and integrated land-use and development planning at river basin level in the project priority areas: Ilog Hilabangan River Basin in the Visayas Region and the Tagum-Libuganon River Basin in Mindanao.
